On May 17, Jim Williams, Executive Director of ASSETS Montco, recently attended the annual meeting of U.S. microenterprise practitioners with Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Muhammad Yunus. Dr Yunus, a pioneer in the strategy of microcredit for the poor in his native Bangladesh, made a surprise visit, telling the nearly 600 attendees not to underestimate the capacity of human beings. He also told how the concept of microcredit is bringing a new generation out of poverty in his country. The Nobel Laureate, who shared the coveted prize with Grameen Bank, told attendees that because of microcredit – providing small loans to the poor to help them become self-sufficient- the cycle of poverty is being broken in his country. Yunus explained how Grameen Bank, which is owned by its borrowers, is focusing on turning the country’s beggars into “dignified salespersons,” by providing typical loans of $15 and less. “Any money they make from selling things they can give back to the bank,” said Yunus, “but they can never give us any money from begging.” To find out more information please check out the Grameen Website at http://www.grameen-info.org/.
